There are many other trees of the same species in area, but none near the size and form of this tree. The Morrison family would have been the earliest selectors in the 'Rats Castle', (area of granite boulders) circa 1869, taking up permanent residence around 1874. The tree is a remnant and survived initial clearing probably because of its size. It is estimated to be over 300 years old. Thomas, son of Margaret Morrison, gained clear title in 1899 after her death in 1890 and this property is still in the family with the sixth generation in residence.
