REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010
What is significant?
The c1910/1920s shop, and all pre-1950s fabric, and the site to the title boundaries.
How is it significant?
The shop is historically, socially and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The shop is historically significant as one of only three early 20th century shop buildings left in Eltham and one of just two that have intact facades (see also HO124) (Criterion B). The shop is historically and aesthetically significant because its relatively isolated setting reflects patterns of township development during the early part of the 20th century and because it is a key component of the streetscape of Main Road (Criteria A & E). The shop is socially significant because for many years it operated as a post office and played an important part in community life (Criterion G).
BICK STUDY, 1992
This shop is one of just three early 20th century shop buildings left in Eltham and one of just two that have intact facades. These shops are physical links with the country village of Eltham at that time and their siting in isolated locations along the street reflects that village era, as does this building's use as the Post Office for many years. They are also significant streetscape elements.
