Felmongery and wool scouring were amongst the colony's first industries and the Yarra bank between Collingwood and Richmond became the centre of the industry from the mid 1850s. The owner's residence is representative of the preference of early proprietors for living next to their work, as well as being the sole remaining example in the area. The architectural interest of the Alma's arcaded woolshed is emblematic of the pride owners took in their businesses. The whole complex is the earliest remaining substanially intact industrial complex in Collingwood, Victoria's first industrial suburb. Classified: 28/07/1977 Revised: 24/04/1991 |
