The Alma complex has architectural and historical significance at the State level and is the largest and most intact group of fell-mongery structures remaining from the foundation years of Melbourne's industrial development.
Felmongery and wool scouring were amongst the colony's first industries and the Yarra bank between Collingwood and Richmond became the centre of the industry from the mid 1850s.
The owner's residence is representative of the preference of early proprietors for living next to their work, as well as being the sole remaining example in the area. The architectural interest of the Alma's arcaded woolshed is emblematic of the pride owners took in their businesses. The whole complex is the earliest remaining substanially intact industrial complex in Collingwood, Victoria's first industrial suburb.
