The building has both state and national significance as one of a very few pre-gold rush buildings which have survived in Victoria and may be St Kilda's oldest residence. It is reputedly constructed of pre-fabricated materials. Wattle House is notable also for its detailing which includes decorative timber bargeboards, its many gabled roof and stained glass window bays which impart a Gothic revival character. A number of mature trees around the boundaries are the remnants of an exotic garden. The row of trees along its northern boundary includes two mature and very large Dutch elms (Ulmus x hollandica) which date from the c1850s period, and a tall pepper tree (Schinus molle). It has been a local landmark from the 1840s in the prestigious St Kilda Hill area. Despite twentieth century additions at the rear, Wattle House is remarkable for the intactness of the external appearance of Jackson's 19th century residence fronting Jackson Street. | | 15 Jun 2004 | To erect and display a memorial plaque to front fence of existing building | (Source: Port Phillip Council, reference no: 670/2004) | | 15 Aug 2006 | Installation of a plaque on the front fence | (Source: Port Phillip Council, reference no: 904/2006) | | 11 Jun 2009 | construction of three storey building containing dwellings and a reduction in the provision of car parking in accordance with the endorsed plans. | (Source: Port Phillip Council, reference no: 474/2009) | | 19 Jun 2014 | Subdivision of 8 townhouses currently nearing completion. | (Source: Streamlined Planning through Electronic Applications and Referra, reference no: S053343C) | | 25 Jun 2014 | 8 lot subdivision nearing completion ps721606r spear ref no : s053343c | (Source: Port Phillip Council, reference no: 562/2014) |
