AHC Statement of Significance
Old Powder Magazine, Farnsworth Street, Castlemaine, is a brick structure erected in 1856 to the designs of the Public Works Department of Victoria. Constructed on a stone plinth, the face brick structure has a gabled slate roof with large eaves overhang. Featues of the rectangular building are closely spaced buttresses along the long sides and a lean-to roofed section.
Old Powder Magazine, Farnsworth Street, Castlemaine, forms part of the important historic townscape of Castlemaine, is closely associated with the gold-mining heyday of the district and is illustrative of a practice now lost. Powder Magazines are a comparatively rare building type and this example is illustrative of the most substantial formula and is the earliest of that group. Stylistically, the structure is a vernacular Classical Revival design.
Old Powder Magazine, Farnsorth street, Castlemaine, is in fair condition and very largely intact.
Of local significance.
