Why is it Significant?
Historically, it is one of the oldest surviving hotels in Williamstown and one a small number of surviving examples that illustrate how hotels were interspersed throughout residential areas before changes to licensing laws resulted in many being closed between 1880 and 1910. Aesthetically, although altered, it is an extremely rare example of a two-storey timber hotel, one of perhaps only two surviving in Victoria. Although altered, it still expresses its former commercial use by its siting on the property line and two storey scale. (AHC criteria B2 and E1) |
