Integrity of the place is fair. It is of social and historic significance to the local Portarlington community and tourists to the Bellarine Peninsula. The Family Hotel is located on a prominent site in Newcombe Street and has strong association with Portarlington. The front section was built in the 1850's and was known as Calhoun's Family Hotel. John Calhoun, the licensee, was actively involved in business and community affairs. After Calhoun surrender the license in 1886, the Family Hotel was associated with the Miller family until the First World War and continued to be important in providing accommodation for summer visitors as well as being a significant social centre for the local community. It ceased operation as a hotel in the late 1930s and the building has since had a number of uses It is of LOCAL cultural significance.
