STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The breakwater on the River Barwon at Geelong was erected in 1845 and modified in 1848 to the design of the New South Wales Superintendent of Bridges for Port Phillip, David Lennox.
The breakwater, of brick and bluestone construction was located to prevent tidal interference with the fresh water supply from the Barwon River tot he infant Geelong township. The structure largely became redundant in 1874 when a permanent water supply system was established for Geelong. The breakwater was later adopted as a road bridge. The structure is a permanent link with the early years of development at Corio Bay and the Barwon River.
