St Marys Catholic Church, High Street (Midland Highway), Lethbridge is located on the south side of the town. It was built in 1913 and was designed in a simple restrained Georgian Revival style using typical materials for its time. The architects were Messrs. Lusk and Moriarty. The present church replaced an earlier timber church since removed to another site. Mature Pinus radiata (Monterey or Radiata Pines) surround the site although some have been removed. The building is intact, retains an excellent degree of integrity and is in good condition. The Parish of Lethbridge and Meredith, which still includes several other settlements, celebrated its centenary in 1975. How is it Significant? St Marys Catholic Church is of historical, architectural and social significance to the Golden Plains Shire. Why is it Significant? St Marys Catholic Church is of historical significance as a relatively late church, reflecting the continuing prosperity of the Lethbridge district into the early twentieth century. The church is of social significance for reflecting the relative wealth and sense of community of the Catholics in the area. The church is of architectural significance for its conservative use of the Georgian Revival style and as one of the few known works of the partnership of Lusk and Moriarty, and as an example of the important Catholic architect and builder, Bart Moriarty. |
