The single storey brick residence comprises a six-room bungalow which is completely surrounded by a verandah and a separate brick kitchen. The bungalow is simply planned with a long central corridor with french doors at each end and three rooms opening from each side. Most of the rooms have french doors opening onto the verandah. The interior is furnished in the manner of the 1870s. Lake View epitomizes the Australian country town villa in many ways, being completely surrounded by a verandah and with doors to embrace the outside from almost every room. It is simply planned and superbly situated beside the town lake. A bastion of four solid chimneys add a symmetrical dignity to the simple form. From 1876-77, the house was lived in by Walter L Richardson and his family, notably his daughter, the novelist H H Richardson who describes the house and her life in Chiltern in "Ultima Thule", written in 1929. The house has been restored to its condition and appearance during the occupancy of the Richardson family. It is now open for public inspection.
