The building form and quoin work details are typical of 1850s hotels in Geelong. It is one of the few original hotels of social significance in the area. The building has a good degree of integrity. It is of aesthetic, historic and social significance to the region. The Black Swan Hotel dates from the early period of settlement and was a social centre for the local Whittington community. It was also a stopping place for Cobb and Co and other coaches. Its name was changed to the White Swan some time before 1881.The hotel lost its licence around the time of the First World War and has since been used as a residence. The stuccoed facade, scored to imitate stone, the emphasised quoin work and stringcourse are all characteristic of the Victorian Regency style of which this is a distinctive example.
