It is of historical significance as a substantial weatherboard house which relates to an early phase of development at Point Lonsdale. Architecturally, Samarai is significant as possibly the first house in this area to incorporate a pyramidal roof with integrated flared verandah and central dormer, initiating a pattern repeated later in other large houses in the Point Lonsdale area. The deep verandah frieze is also possibly a source for the later commonly found grid timbered friezes of nearby houses. More generally, Samarai epitomises the transitional architectural style which dominated Point Lonsdale during the growth period of Federation, and is distinguished by the prominent roof and verandah frieze with alternating panels of vertical fretwork over basket arches and 'shingled' weatherboard. |
