STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The single storey brick residence 'Barrabool' at 13 Pepperdine Way, Highton, is of unknown origins but possibly erected as early as 1855-60 for Lewis Conran. The residence was established by 1861, being shown as the abode of WH Bonsey, Public Magistrate on Andrew McWilliams map of the Barrabool locality of that date. The original verandah has been removed and the exterior and interior substantially modified by relatively recent alterations and improvements. The colonial Gerogian style residence, which dates from the earliest period of settlement in the Geelong region, had interesting associations with Conran and Bonsey, an early Geelong magistrate.

REFERENCES
The history of 'Barrabool' remains largely undocumented. The exact date of construction is unknown but can be reliably dated prior to 1861. Several tender notices for brick or stone houses at unspecified locations in the Barrabool Hills are recorded in the files of the Geelong Advertiser for the period 1855-60. The name of the proprietor, on whose behalf the tenders have been advertised, is generally not listed in these tender notices. The most likely tender notice is recorded as Geelong Advertiser 24th January, 1855 'tenders for a brick house with stone foundations on the Barrabool Hills. Apply FM Moore, Engineer and Architect, Herne Hill, Newtown' but the information and location is inconclusive.

Copy, enlarged and simplified by JW Meehan, Geelong, February 1970 shows 'Barrabool' as residence of WH Bonsey.
