The former California gully Methodist church is of historical and architectural importance for the following reasons:
1. As a substantial Wesleyan Methodist church built in 1870-75 which reflects the strength of non-conformist religious sentiment in the central goldfields region of Victoria last century.
2. As an important example of church architecture built to the design of the architects McPherson and Laurie. The interior of the church comprises an exceptionally fine and intact decorative scheme consisting principally of a a star-spangled ceiling and imitation masonry block walls. cedar pews provide seating for 550 people. The unpainted exterior brickwork is a striking feature with bichrome yellow on red, with a Lombardic step-bracketted gable and Gothic pinnacles. |
