REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010
What is significant?
The c1984 bizan-style kiln, the buildings around it and the site, to a radius of 50 metres (The site has connections with other artist's homes that were constructed nearby. See HO8, HO9, HO40, HO41 and HO148).
How is it significant?
The kiln is historically, technically and socially significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The kiln is historically and technically significant as the first of its type constructed in Australia and as a rare example of the use of traditional Japanese technology in Australia (Criteria B & F). The kiln is historically significant for its connections with the Dunmoochin Artists' Community and because it demonstrates the traditional diversity of artistic pursuits at Dunmoochin (Criterion H). The kiln is historically and socially significant because its construction, in 1984, and use since then illustrates the continued development of Dunmoochin's artistic community (Criteria A & G).
