The Fogolar Furlan Club at 1 Matisi Street, Thornbury was established on its current site in 1957 by a small group of migrants from the Friuli Region, in the north east of Italy. The current club building is a relatively recent construction. The Furlan Club is one of over 160 Fogolars worldwide, although membership is not now exclusive to people from Friuli. It is one of Melbourne's earlier Italian clubs, one of only three to own its own premises before the 1970s. The club is used for traditional cultural and recreational activities, providing a focal point and meeting place for the community, and as a place where the history and traditions of Friuli and links between Italy and Australia are maintained. The use of the place by the Italian community as a community focal point and gathering place is significant. The physical fabric of the Fogolar Furlan Social Club has not been identified in this study as significant. Further study may identify significance for the Italian community, for aesthetic or social reasons. How is it significant? The Fogolar Furlan Club at 1 Matisi Street, Thornbury is of local historic and social significance to the City of Darebin. Why is it significant? Historically, the Fogolar Furlan Social Club at 1 Matisi Street, Thornbury is significant for the evidence it provides of the earliest significant group of migrants to settle in Darebin the long-standing and strong presence of the Italian community in Darebin, in particular since the post Second World War immigration boom. It also has historic significance as one of Melbourne's earlier Italian clubs, and one of only three to own its own premises before the 1970s. (AHC Criterion A.4) The Fogolar Furlan Social Club is also historically important for its association with the Australian government's massive post-war immigration program, which underpinned the growth of Darebin as a suburb of rich cultural diversity. (AHC Criterion A.4). Historically, the Fogolar Furlan Social Club is significant to the City of Darebin as a representative example of the social and cultural activities of the Italian and other ethnic communities in Darebin which have contributed to the development of Darebin's rich cultural diversity, in particular from the years following the Second World War to the present. (AHC Criterion D.2) Socially, the Fogolar Furlan Social Club is significant for reasons of cultural associations, as a place where the history and traditions of Friuli and links with Italy are presented and maintained for present and future generations, through the umbrella organisation Ente Friuli nel Mondo.
