STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The house at 52 Normanby Street, East Geelong, has significance as a predominantly intact example of the Edwardian style. Built in 1912 for William Farquar, a warder, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 52 Normanby Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of the Edwardian style. These qualities include the recessed broad hipped roof form, together the gable, minor gable and hipped verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, two unpainted pressed red brick chimneys with white-rendered bands and terra cotta pots, modest eaves, timber framed casement windows at the front, central timber framed doorway, square timber verandah columns, decorative Art Nouveau timber fretwork verandah valances and shallow-arched timber brackets, timber fretwork arches under the projecting gable, and the gable infill (timber shingling and brackets). The front timber picket fence also contributes to the significance of the place.
The house at 52 Normanby Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in East Geelong during the Edwardian (c.1890-1915) period. In particular, this house has associations with William Farquar, a warder and original owner who had it built in 1912.
Overall, the house at 52 Normanby Street is of LOCAL significance.
