On land now occupied by Caltex Newport Terminal at Spotswood, a quarantine ground and burial ground were marked out by Government Surveyor, Robert Hoddle, in 1849. The land was part of allotment XV, section VII, Parish of Cut Paw Paw and had frontage to the Yarra River. There is no available evidence to suggest that the reserved land was ever used for quarantine or burial purposes. In 1852, the Victorian Government moved to establish a permanent quarantine station at Point Nepean. The reserved land at Spotswood was later used as a quarry. How is it significant? The former quarantine and burial ground is of historical significance to the State of Victoria. Why is it significant? The Spotswood quarantine and burial ground reserve is significant as an early measure to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the Port Phillip District by quarantining the passengers and crew of ships arriving in Port Phillip on which there had been cases of serious infectious diseases. However, there is little evidence that the reserve was used to quarantine or bury fever victims. It is therefore not considered to be of significance to the State of Victoria. |
