This school is commonly known as the "Bell Topper Hill School", a reference to an incident at an earlier school building on the site when ' early in the gold rush, a party of young Englishmen arrived clad in fashioned English garb including bell topper hats...finding such apparel unsuitable, they made a bonfire of bell toppers to show their determination to abandon the old life and devote themselves to the new'. There were a number of earlier schools on the site. The present building was opened in 1883. The architect was H.R Bastow, builder was A. Button and the cost was four thousand three hundred pounds plus one hundred and seven pounds for wooden quarters for the caretaker.
