| What is significant? The former Garibaldi State School is situated on the northern side of Hardies Hill Road, 250m west of its intersection with the Buninyong-Mount Mercer Road, within the township of Garibaldi. The former school building stands on land originally reserved for public purposes, with Garibaldi School No. 2173 commencing on this site from 1 August 1879. By the early 20th century, the number of enrolments dropped significantly, and the school remained unstaffed from 1940 until its closure on 22 September 1943. Today the school building serves as a community facility for the surrounding Garibaldi settlement. The weatherboard school building is of standard design, featuring two half-hipped gabled wings, original multi-paned windows with fanlights and a substantial central red brick chimney protruding from the corrugated iron roof. The school site is surrounded by Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine) trees, originally planted as a memorial to the soldiers of the district who had served in World War 1 and a Quercus robur (English Oak) located at the front of the school is presumed to have been planted during Arbor Day celebrations of the 1920s. The former Garibaldi State School is in excellent condition and retains a high degree of integrity. How is it significant? The former Garibaldi State School is of historical, social and architectural significance to the township of Garibaldi and the Golden Plains Shire. Why is significant? The former Garibaldi State School is of historical significance as a surviving example of a state school, built by the Department of Education in 1879, which served the children of the Garibaldi district until 1943. The school is of social significance for providing a tangible link that illustrates the collective aspirations of the local residence which lobbied for its establishment, and continues to serve the Garibaldi settlement today as a community facility. The school site has social significance as a tribute to the roles of those from the local community who served and died in World War 1, through the establishment of the memorial Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine) perimeter plantings. The school is of architectural significance as a surviving example of a typical school facility dated from the late 19th century. |
