The original verandah has been altered to form a deck, but the general external integrity is good. The house is important for its early date of construction (1860), its remnant garden and rare pattern book origins. The Victorian Gothic two-storey villa erected On Bell Post Hill in 1859 was designed by local Architect, J. L. Shaw. David Coghill purchased the land in 1849, and this distinctive villa structure probably replaced and earlier house on the site. Coghill was an influential early settler in Victoria and this building reflects the interest in the picturesque gothic revival during the 1850's in Victoria.
