Rock Rose Cottage, 1920 Glenelg Highway, Scarsdale is situated on the northern side of the Glenelg Highway, directly opposite the entrance to the Scarsdale-Smythesdale Cemetery. The simple c1850-60 vernacular cottage is a single-storey symmetrical building with a transverse gable roof at the front and two hipped roofs at the rear. According to local historical accounts, a brewery and possibly one of the townships 17 hotels operated from the site in the mid nineteenth century. What is certain is the existence of a cellar located under the front rooms of the cottage 'where barrels of beer were stored before being delivered in wagons' to the early hotels in Scarsdale. Between 1885-1912 a depot for the distribution of Coghlan & Tulloch Ballarat Brewing Company Ltd liquor operated from the front section of the cottage, firstly by Micahel Roach and later by Arthur Hatfield. In 1923, Arthur's daughter Emma 'Isabella' Hatfield married Daniel Allen Carey. The Carey family resided in the cottage until the mid 1980s. Several owners have occupied the cottage since its sale in 1985 and undertaken extensive alterations, the most notable being the filling of the cellar in the late 1980s. The cottage is largely intact and retains a high degree of integrity. It is in good condition. The cottage is supported by traditional gardens in front and at the rear

Rose Rock Cottage and former brewery is of historical significance for its association with the prominent Coghlan & Tulloch Ballarat Brewing Company Ltd and as a regional depot for the distribution of liquor to the many hotels operating in Scarsdale during the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. It is of social significance for reflecting brewing as a cottage industry, a way of life long past following the industrialization and centralization of brewing in major cities. Rose Rock Cottage is of architectural significance as an example of a substantial vernacular cottage built of brick rather than timber.
