The house at 14 Ligar Street, Stawell, has significance a former private school that originally operated as the Stawell Ladies College under the direction of a Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dumerque. Built in 1874, the school building was enlarged in 1878 and during the ensuing years from 1884 until 1905, it changed hands on a number of occasions, becoming known as "Glenara", "Marmion" and "Harvard College". The building also has significance as an intact example of the Victorian style, and appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 14 Ligar Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of the Victorian style. These qualities include the elongated hipped roof form that traverses the site, together with the gable roof and bullnosed verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, timber panelling and quoinwork simulating blockwork on the front gable, green painted galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, rendered brick chimneys with projecting tops, narrow eaves, timber framed double hung windows, four panelled timber door with sidelights, projecting faceted bay window and the turned timber finial on the gable end.
The house at 14 Ligar Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of the private school originally known as the Stawell Ladies College. Built in 1874 for a Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dumerque, the building was enlarged in 1878 and by 1884 it was known as "Glenara", operated by the Misses McKay. The school building also has significance as the "Marmion" school operated by Miss Westmorland, and as "Harvard College" when owned by Mr. Albert Hale between 1895 and 1899. The building has further significance as a private home for over 100 years.
