Historically, 'Clifton' is significant for its strong associations with the important quarrying industry, which once thrived in this part of the City. One of the oldest houses in this part of North Williamstown, it demonstrates the earliest stage of development of this area. It is also of interest for its associations with the locally important Elsum family.
