It is of historical importance as one of a group of five properties designed by Webb, the others being Claremont, Chelmer, and a pair of shops, situated together at the intersection of Church, New, and St Andrews Streets in Brighton. Charles Webb lived in Brighton all his life after settling there in 1849 and building his home, Farleigh (now 6 Farleigh Grove), and Lauriston provides a vital link in the chain of his association with the Brighton area. Architecturally, Lauriston is a fine example of Webb's domestic style and is an intact Italianate villa that displays many characteristic features of the style and that reflects the Boom period development of Brighton.
