Group Statement of Significance: The important Wardell corner bank of 1883 is flanked by two allied and integrated office buildings of 1891 by William Pitt at 380 Collins Street and 90 Queen Street. This major corner group of Gothic Revival buildings of the Land Boom period is the only one of its kind still surviving in the City of Melbourne. Their detail is sympathetic and such remodelling as has occurred has been most skilfully carried out. Group Classified: 02/12/1974 Individual Statement of Significance: Designed by William Pitt and built in 1890 for the Stock Exchange of Melbourne Co. Ltd. and occupied by the Melbourne Safe Deposits Co. Ltd. this seven storey building has a very ornately detailed facade in the Gothic Revival style. It is linked behind the adjacent corner bank building with number 382 Collins Street, also designed by William Pitt in 1890 in the same style and for the same owner. Classified: 15/06/1978 |
