The 1878 one-room, bichromatic brick bank building and the surrounding site to a radius of 25 metres. How is it significant? The bank building is historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. Why is it significant? The bank building is historically significant because it reflects the rural nature of the Shire (and the small communities that lived within it, until after World War II) and as a fine example of a now rare building type, the single room bank (Criteria A, B & D). The bank building is aesthetically significant because it features bichromatic brickwork and remains a significant element of the streetscape (Criterion E). BICK STUDY, 1992 This building is a fine example of a once common, but now rare building type, the single room bank. The presence of two such buildings in the Shire of Eltham reflects the rural nature and small communities of the Municipality right up until after the Second World War. The other one room former bank is at Hurstbridge and is a timber structure from the 1900s/1910s, complementing the duochromatic brick Victorian era Eltham building; both are excellent examples of this type of building. Though now screened by planting this building remains an important element in the streetscape.
