The property at 760 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the Shire of Nillumbik. Why is it significant? The property at 760 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is historically significant for associations with the early development of Hurstbridge. The residence is located on an early selection owned by C. H. Hawkins. The house constructed in circa 1911 is an early surviving residence in the main street of Hurstbridge dating from the boom period within the township stimulated by the orchard industry and the coming of the railway in 1912. The property is of historical significance for its associations with Emily and Charlotte Hawkins who owned and ran a drapery business in the township from 1918 to at least the 1940s. (Criteria A, B & H) The property at 760 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is aesthetically significant as a substantially intact example of an Edwardian style residence. Key features of the style include the hipped roof with return verandah, timber framed windows and the scalloped vertical timber strapping to the underside of the verandah. The residence is significant for its contribution to the surviving collection of early 20th century buildings in the main street of Hurstbridge indicating the appearance of the township during its hey day around the 1920s.
