The Residence and its setting at 70-72 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh are of local historical and architectural significance to the Shire of Moorabool. Why is it significant? The Residence and its setting at 70-72 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh is of local historical significance for its demonstration of the prosperous period in the history of Bacchus Marsh stimulated by farming, industry and closer settlement. The residence was built in 1911 for builder, amateur architect and property developer Cornelius L. T. Alkemade. The property is of historical significance for its associations with this prominent resident and demonstrates the wealth of the owner in its grand nature and location on the Main Street hill. The Residence and its setting at 70-72 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh is of aesthetic significance as a distinctive example of an Edwardian residence with fine detailing. Features of note demonstrating the Edwardian style include the high hipped roof with terracotta Marseilles tiled roof and terracotta finials, return verandah terminating at projecting gable wings, segmental head windows grouped with leadlight fanlights, roughcast walls to dado height terminating in a moulding and roughcast chimneys with decoration. Its setback from the street and setting amongst a garden of lawn and mature trees, as well as, the prominent location on the Main Street hill contributes to the aesthetic significance of the place. 1995 A characteristic large Edwardian brick house built in 1911, set in an appropriate mature garden, designed and built by its first owner, Cornelius L.T. van Alkemade and in the same family since. Of local historical significance as the representative embodiment of a way of life and its social values in the comfort able Edwardian period, before the Great War.Also significant lor its association with both Cornelius L.T. and his son Theo van Alkemade, both important local figures in Bacchus Marsh. It is also of architectural significance as representative of the Edwardian domestic style, its garden plantage and of the design work of Cornelius L.T. van Alkemade. |
