Built in 1921 for James Putland, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street. This house also forms part of pair of similarly designed and constructed house in this part of McKillop Street. The house at 70 McKillop Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a transitional Late Federation and interwar Bungalow style. These qualities include the complex configuration of hipped and gabled roof forms that project at the front and side, return broken back verandah under the main roofline, and the chamfered corner under the verandah. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, predominantly single storey height with attic space, terra cotta tile roof cladding, unpainted brick wall construction, timber framed double hung windows (including the projecting rectangular bay), attic brackets and shingled balustrade (with timber framed windows and timber and glazed door within), timber framed doorway, window leadlighting, terra cotta roof finial and the decorative gable infill (panelling, brackets and timber ventilator). The house at 70 McKillop Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Geelong in the early 20th century. In particular, this house has associations with the original owner, James Putland, who had it built in 1921. Overall, the house at 70 McKillop Street is of LOCAL significance.
