| Last updated on - September 25, 2009 What is Significant? Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 70 High Street, Inverleigh is located on the north side of the main street of the town. It was built in 1933, possibly as means of providing work during the Depression, and was designed in a simple restrained Gothic Revival style using typical materials for its time. The interior of the church is substantially intact and contributes to the overall integrity of the building. Integrity is demonstrated by the internal space, roof structure, battened wall linings, timber dado linings, interior doors with gothic arches, arched entry to the sacristy, windows, light fittings, pews and ecclesiastical fixtures and fittings. No architect has yet been associated with the design. The present church replaced an earlier timber church on this site which in turn replaced another on a site near the Inverleigh Cemetery. Mature Cupressus macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress Trees) surround the site. The building is largely intact, retains an excellent degree of integrity and is in good condition. How is it Significant? Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Inverleigh is of historical, architectural and social significance to the Golden Plains Shire. Why is it Significant? Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Inverleigh is of historical significance as a late church, possibly reflecting the need for employment during the Great Depression. The church is of social significance for reflecting the relative wealth and sense of community of the Catholics in the area. The church is of architectural significance for its conservative use of the ubiquitous Gothic Revival style. |
