Archibald Memorial marks the birthplace of one of Australia's most accomplished and dedicated journalists and a generous benefactor to the community. It is of regional significance. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE - GRC - HISTORIC PLACES DOCUMENTATION SHEET NO. 288 The J. F. Archibald Memorial marks the birthplace of one of Australia's most accomplished and dedicated Journalists, and founder of the celebrated Bulletin in 1880. The Archibald Fountain in Sydney, The Archibald Prize for portrait painting, and the Australian Journalists Association benevolent fund are also established in memory of this great Autralian writer, and as a consequence of generous bequests in the will of Jules Francois Arhcibald. Born at Kildare (North Geelong) Archibald, baptized as john Feltham (later changed to Jules Francois in a period of Francophile passion) lived only a short time in Geelong.
