What is significant?
The Prince of Wales Park Methodist Church was established on this site in 1903 with a timber church (extant) brought from another site in the district. As Thornbury grew in the inter-war period a new church, designed by the prominent architect, A.S. Eggleston was erected in 1923 to meet the growing needs of the congregation and the earlier church was used as a hall. The church complex became redundant following the formation in June 1977 of the Uniting Church in Australia and since 1986 has been the Greek Orthodox, Holy Church of St George. The following elements contribute to the significance of the place:
- The 1923 church, which is a modest inter-war Gothic Revival church. The walls of the church are rendered brick and the building has a street facing gable roof with an intersecting transverse gable towards its rear. A porch with crenellations at the tops of its turrets and at its corners has been built at the side of the street-facing and transverse gables. The interior of the church was not inspected, but may contain an early organ.
- The weatherboard hall adjacent to the church, which is probably the original church building on the site constructed in 1903.
Later alterations and/or additions, including the new porch which has been built at the front of the c.1923 church, are not significant.
