STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The house at 64 Sydney Parade, Geelong, has significance as a predominantly intact example of the Victorian style. Built in 1885 to a design by the Geelong architectural firm of A.J. Derrick and Co. for Frederick Hornsey, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 64 Sydney Parade is architecturally significant at LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of the Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form and the concave verandah with central gabled portico that project towards the street frontage. Other intact of appropriate qualities include the symmetrical composition, single storey height, slate roof tiles, galvanised corrugated iron verandah roof cladding, two rendered brick chimneys with projecting tops, narrow eaves with worked timber brackets and decorative panels, elaborate central timber framed doorway with moulded timber architraves and ropework timber pilasters that have decorative capitals, four panelled timber door, dentillated timber door head, leadlighted sidelights and highlights, panelled timber bases to the sidelights, elaborate timber framed double hung tripartite windows having ropework timber pilasters with decorative capitals, moulded timber architraves and small worked timber brackets, round cast iron verandah columns with decorative capitals and pedestals, decorative cast iron verandah valances and brackets, ornamental timber verandah fascias, decorative cast iron verandah gable infill and the turned timber finial that surmounts the gable verandah.
The house at 64 Sydney Parade is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Geelong in the second half of the 19th century. In particular, this house has associations with Frederick Hornsey, member of the Independent Order of Rechabites and original owner who instigated construction in 1885. The house also has associations with the Geelong architectural firm of A.J. Derrick and Co.
Overall, the house at 64 Sydney Parade is of LOCAL significance.
