Possibly built by 1855, it is a double-fronted, single-storey house with an attic and timber finial at the apex of the high gable. It has a squared and coursed bluestone rubble front elevation with quoins and random rubble at the sides. It has a slate roof and the upper gable is timber. The skillion verandah has curved brackets. Twentieth century (or later) alterations and additions including the gable front and bargeboards, the rebuilt verandah and the fence are not significant. How is it significant? The house at 6 Yarra Street, Richmond is aesthetically and historically significant to the locality of Richmond and the City of Yarra. Why is it significant? The house at 6 Yarra Street, Richmond is historically significant (Criteria A & B) as a rare example of an early house, which provides tangible evidence of the first phase of residential development in Richmond. The house at 6 Yarra Street, Richmond is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as a coursed rubble, bluestone cottage set on the street line. The stone construction technique and high gabled roof are rare in Richmond. |
