The building appears to be in fair-good condition when viewed from the street. The house known as 'Belmont' at 6 Wimmera Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates early design qualities of a predominantly interwar Bungalow style, although the elevated traversing gable is representative of the 1898 construction as the Belmont College building. The interwar Bungalow stylistic qualities include the brick chimney, broad eaves, projecting verandah gable and the skillion return verandahs that project to the front and sides. Other intact or appropriate qualities of the interwar Bungalow style include the squat and square tapered concrete verandah columns that are supported by face brick piers, and the timber framed double hung windows. The house known as 'Belmont' at 6 Wimmera Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of "Belmont College" from 1898. Opened in 1899, the college was conducted by the Misses Bate until 1930, during which time day, evening and Saturday morning classes were held in various subjects. By the mid-late 1930s, the college has been converted into a private house by Mr. R.M.S. Brett, teacher at the Stawell High School. He introduced the verandah gable and return verandahs, and basically transformed the building into an interwar Bungalow styled home. The house known as 'Belmont' at 6 Wimmera Street has social interest. It is recognised by sections of the Stawell community for educational reasons as the location of the former "Belmont College".
