| Last updated on - January 7, 2010 REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010 What is significant? The 1889 schoolhouse, the 1882 portable classroom (formerly State school No 1737 of Smith's Gully, moved here in 1894), and the 1922/23 extensions, also the Maud Rattray memorial bell and stand of 1922, and the surrounding site to the title boundaries. Why is it significant? The schoolhouse, portable classroom, and Maud Rattray memorial bell are historically, socially and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. How is it significant? The schoolhouse and portable classroom are historically and socially significant because they have served the local community since the late 19th century (Criterion G). The portable classroom is historically significant because it illustrates the practice in the latter part of the 19th century and through the early 20th century of relocating school buildings (Criterion A) (See also St Andrews (HO20) and Hurstbridge (HO3) school buildings). Aesthetically and historically, the grouping of church, school, store and post office, that occurs within the centre of Panton Hill, is typical of the pattern of development in country towns throughout Victoria (Criteria A & E). The Maud Rattray memorial bell is historically and socially significant because it is an unusual form of memorial and provides a continuous link with the organisation of each school day since 1922 (Criteria A, B & G). |
