| The Laverton State School No 2857 (former), designed by the Public Works Department and constructed in 1888 with later alterations and additions, at 43 Kiora Street, Altona Meadows. How is it Significant? The Laverton State School No 2857 (former) is of local historic, social and aesthetic significance to the City of Hobsons Bay. Why is it Significant? Historically, it is significant as the oldest school building in the municipality and is one of the only surviving one-room schools in the metropolitan area. It demonstrates the somewhat premature speculative development of Laverton over 100 years ago, as well as the beginnings of Free Education in Victoria in the decade after the Education Act of 1876. (AHC criteria A4 and B2) Aesthetically, it is significant as a rare surviving example of a relatively intact nineteenth century one-room brick school, which illustrates the types of standard schools that were erected during the late nineteenth century. (AHC criteria B2 and D2) Socially, it is significant as the focus of the local community over a long period and the subject of recent extensive community action to seek its preservation. (AHC criterion G1) |
