The house at 38 Ligar Street, Stawell, has significance as a moderately intact example of the Victorian style. Although relocated to this site, the house reflects residential developments in the Stawell township in the 19th century, and was a private school conducted by a Mr. Brumby in c.1935. It appears to be in fair condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 38 Ligar Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although relocated, it still demonstrates some original design qualities of the Victorian style. These qualities include the steeply pitched hipped roof form, together with the ogee form encircling verandah. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the symmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, narrow eaves, faceted bay windows, timber framed double hung windows, timber framed doorway with highlight, stop chamfered timber verandah columns, cast iron verandah brackets and the framed cast iron verandah valances.
The house at 38 Ligar Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in 19th century Stawell, and with the private school conducted by a Mr. Brumby established in the house on its former site in 1868 and continued into the 1880s.
