Rawlins farm complex, comprising the buildings constructed by the Rawlins family between 1920 and c.1950, at 34-36 Worthing Road, Devon Meadows. How is it significant? The Rawlins farm complex is of local historic and technical significance to the City of Casey. Why is it significant? Historically, it is significant as a rare surviving example in the Devon Meadows area of a farm complex, which illustrates the development of the area as a result of closer settlement during the interwar period. The significance of the place is enhanced by the information about the farm provided by Miss Rhoda Rawlins, which assists in understanding and interpreting its history and development. (AHC criteria A4, C2 and D2) Technically, it is significant as a rare surviving example of the 'pug and pole' construction technique, which relate to a tradition of primitive building techniques used on French Island and the Mornington Peninsula during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. (AHC criteria B4 and F1) The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) provide the following Statement of Significance: "This rare group of owner-built pug and pole structures of twentieth century date, comprising a farmhouse and outbuildings of 1922 and later, is significant of a State level as an example of primitive structures. The relate to a tradition of pug and pole building which was especially prevalent on French Island from the 1890's, and of earlier wattle and daub structures on both French Island and the Mornington Peninsula. The house itself, the creamery and one shed to the northeast, are substantially of this construction, and, though severely decayed, illustrate the method very well. Two other sheds which contain fragments of pug and pole, another of weatherboard and another clad in sheet iron, are considered to be of slight if any importance and are not included in this classification." |
