Built in the late 19th or early 20th century, the house appears to be in fair condition when viewed from the street and is reflective of some of residential developments in Stawell of that era. The house at 27 Campbell Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. The house also demonstrates original design qualities of an Edwardian style.These qualities include the recessed hipped roof form that traverses the site, together with the minor hipped roof and hipped bullnosed verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, two brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops, narrow eaves, turned timber verandah columns, timber fretwork verandah arch and timber fretwork verandah valances, front six panelled timber door with sidelights and highlights, timber framed windows and the window hoods. The front capped timber picket fence also contributes to the significance of the place, as does the mature Italian Cypress towards the rear. Overall, the house at 27 Campbell Street is of LOCAL significance. The significance of the house also relies on the retention of the neighbouring house at 25 Campbell Street. |
