How is it significant? The Union Hotel at 252 Union Road, Ascot Vale is of local historic, social and architectural significance to the City of Moonee Valley. Why is it significant? It is historically significant as a public meeting place and thus prominent in many Essendonians lives, also one of the three hotels placed at the apices of the Temperance Township triangle, after prohibition of alcohol sellers within the town's limits. (Criteria A & D) It is architecturally significant as a skilfully and richly ornamented hotel building in a typical form and style for its period, which is also notable as a major streetscape element within the historic Union Road precinct.
