Built in 1915 for Mrs Helen Horgan, hotelier, the Kilkenny Inn has State significance on architectural grounds for its fine Edwardian Free Style characteristics, its unusual corner tower and Arts and Crafts influenced detailing. The Kilkenny Inn is also of historical and social significance as a popular watering place since the First World War. The architects were Sydney Smith and Ogg, who were responsible for a multitude of hotel designs in the metropolis. These range in expression from the Dan O 'Connell Hotel at 225 Canning Street, Carlton, the Bendigo Hotel at 125 - 127 Johnston Street, Collingwood, to the Markillies Hotel at 562 - 564 Flinders Street, Melbourne. The Kilkenny Inn was however designed at a time when Robert Haddon was engaged under contract of Sydney, Smith & Ogg and reflects the design characteristics of his published work at this period in its innovative form and details.
