The surviving single storey brick printing office dates from the early 1860s. It has a simple hipped roof and the walls are punctuated with brick piers. Several newspapers were published here during the nineteenth century and distributed throughout the area. Occasional editions of the Standard are still published here. This is the earliest newspaper office surviving in the north-east of Victoria. The Federal Standard was published here from the early 1860s to 1969 when it ceased publication. The newspaper is notable for its association with G H Mott and had considerable influence in the development of Chiltern. The surviving office is an outstanding historical feature of this important town, the printing equipment and machinery are intact and of considerable interest. The building is intact and the printing machinery still survives; careful attention should be paid to the fabric however, in view of the poor quality of the brick. Classified: 24/06/1971 |
