Historically, it is significant as one of a small number of pre-1860 dwellings in Williamstown, which demonstrate the early development of the city. As the basalt home of a stonecutter, it is also significant for its strong associations with the early stone and quarrying industry, which thrived in Williamstown during the nineteenth century. Aesthetically, it is significant as a superior example of an early simple symmetrical Victorian villa, which is notable for its dressed basalt masonry construction that demonstrates the skill of its original owner and presumed builder.
