What is significant?
The Prince of Wales Congregational Church at 16-18 Martin Street, Thornbury was built in 1914 and replaced a timber church erected on this site in 1894, which then became the church hall. From c.1965-86 the complex was used by the Greek Orthodox Church and since then by the Church of the Nazarene. The following elements contribute to the significance of the place:
- The 1914 church, whichis in a restrained Gothic style and has a street-facing (Martin Street) gable roof clad in corrugated galvanised steel sheeting. The brick walls have a rendered banding and there is other render detailing around wall openings and at the tops of buttresses. A porch projects towards Martin Street, which has a sunburst motif above an aluminium frame double-door. A brick sanctuary has been added at the rear.
- The 1894 timber church, now the church hall, situated at the rear of the 1914 church, facing Armadale Street. It is a weatherboard building with a street facing gable roof, with a rear extension constructed in 1917, to form the kindergarten.
Later alterations and/or additions including the additions to the porch of the 1914 church are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Prince of Wales Congregational Church is of local historic, architectural and social significance to Darebin City.
Why is it significant?
Historically, the former Prince of Wales Congregational Church, now the Church of the Nazarene, is significant as a church that is associated with two phases of development in Thornbury; suburban development in the early twentieth century and migration in the post-World War Two era. Built as a Congregational Church in 1914, it was used by the Greek Orthodox Church from c.1972 and since 1986 has been used by the Church of the Nazarene. The various changes in denominations that used the church reflect the cultural changes in the suburb throughout the twentieth century. The significance of the place is enhanced by its rarity value as perhaps the only Congregational Church in Darebin. (AHC criteria A.4, B.2)
The former Prince of Wales Congregational Church, constructed in 1914, is architecturally significant as a representative example of a modest brick church in a restrained Gothic style. The earlier weatherboard church is also significant as an example of a simple timber church building from the late nineteenth century and the complex as a whole is typical of the more modest buildings erected by smaller denominations in the early twentieth century. (AHC criterion D.2)
