Please note that this is a "Building Citation", not a "Statement of Significance". For further information refer to the Building Citation held by the City of Yarra. History: The 1858 Hodgkinson map shows this building in Napoleon Street, and it is possible that it might date from before 1851. By 1871 John Croft owned a stone house here as an investment, and by 1873 it had passed to Daniel MacCarthy who retained ownership in 1893. Description: 12 Napoleon Street, Collingwood, is a pair of semi-detached, single-storey bluestone cottages, with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The roof extends to form a verandah on the street elevation, supported on timber posts and with a timber front fence. Doors are four panelled, and windows are double-hung sashes with vertical glazing bars. The front elevation is rendered. Significance: The attached pair of houses at 12 Napoleon Street, Collingwood, is of local architectural and historical significance. Relatively intact, they are rare, early examples of bluestone workers' cottages, illustrating the living conditions in an urban industrial environment. |
