The suburb of Sandringham had begun to develop after the rail line reached there in 1887, and particularly after the end of the 1890s depression. The Post Office was designed by the Commonwealth Department of Works and replaced an earlier post office at Gypsy Village, slightly to the north, which was bypassed by the new railway line. The original design has been modified, with the removal of the original gabled front porch and the construction of a new verandah along the Waltham Street facade in the 1980s, to allow for disabled access, and the bricking in of the original verandah on the north-west end. The Sandringham Post Office is located in the business centre of Sandringham, close to the Railway Station. It is a domestic-scaled single storey red brick building with a tiled gable roof, another small gable facing the street, and with a 1980s brick verandah at the front. The original brick banding in the gables is now painted. How is it significant? The Sandringham Post Office is significant for historical and aesthetic reasons at a Local level. Why is it significant? The Sandringham Post Office is historically significant for its association with the first successful phase of the suburbanisation of the municipality, and as one of the oldest remaining buildings in the Sandringham shopping centre. Sandringham Post Office has aesthetic significance for its contribution to the streetscapes of the Sandringham precinct.
