The former St James' Anglican Church, designed by Tadgell Bros and built c.1892, at 1 Hudson Street, Moonee Ponds is significant. It is is a typical example of a small Gothic style timber church of simple design as they were constructed in the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth centuries. The front gable of the church is adorned with a decorative barge board standing proud from the main wall. There is a small Gothic style porch centrally located in the main facade. The design of the Church building is symmetrical. The interior of the building matches the overall design in its simplicity. The arched windows are plainly pointed, the walls are with a timber dado, the ceiling has timber lining and the exposed trusses are also constructed from timber. Most interior fittings such as the pews, the pulpit, altar and font have been removed. A memorial dedicated to Robert Hedge who died in 1901 was still in the Church in 2008. Non-original alterations and additions to the church are not significant. How is it significant? The former St James' Anglican Church is of local, historic, social and aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley. Why is it significant? It is historically significant (Criterion A) as an early example of the community facilities that were established in response to the suburban development boom in Moonee Ponds during the late nineteenth century. It has social value (Criterion G) because of its role as a place of worship in the community for over 100 years. It is aesthetically important as a simple successful design of low and mixed Gothic small suburban church. (Criterion E) |
